Abstract

Key technology for maintaining surface water quality is nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater. The most common and simplest technology is biological nitrogen removal and chemical precipitation of phosphorus. In this work, occurrence of bacteria Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis, which can remove both of these nutrients, was monitored. The occurrence of these organisms and use of their potential in the biological nutrient removal can bring significant benefits to the operation of wastewater treatment plants, such as reduced dose of coagulating agents, lower sludge production and lower demands on aeration of the oxic part of the technology. This work is focused on monitoring of the occurrence of these organisms in wastewater treatment plants in the Czech Republic. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization was used to monitor and evaluate these bacteria, because conventional methods are not sufficient. The implementation of this method is described in the experimental part and obtained results are further discussed.
